Backshifting in report speech
In reported clause, we sometimes moving tense of clause back to one tense
Backshifting is not nescessary, we only use it to imply something has
changed.
Example:
- Original sentense: I love you
- Reported sentense: She said that she loves you (She still love you, even now)
- Reported sentense: She said that she loved you (She loved you before, not sure if she still love you now)
Example:
- Jackson said it is important for parents to remain consitent with cultivating empathy over time.
- Jackson said it was important for parents to remain consistent with cultivating emphathy over time. (Not sure if it still true now)
